Breast Imaging Fellowship Year Starting July 1, 2026

The Breast Imaging Radiology Fellowship at the State University of New York at Stony Brook is a one year full-time closely supervised training program at a designated Level 1 Trauma Center. This program goes through the Match cycle and is not accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).Ìý

Overview

Stony Brook University Hospital serves the entire Suffolk County of Long Island.ÌýÌýOur program has a unique strength in that we can offer both academic hospital setting as well as community hospital and private practice for the fellow's training.ÌýÌýAt 51±¬ÁÏÍø, breast care is the focus of a comprehensive academic program -- the only one of its kind on Long Island.ÌýÌýAt its core is our multidisciplinary Breast Care Cancer Team.ÌýÌýTo patients, this means an extraordinary range of clinical resources and technologies, a treatment plan tailor-made to their needs, and a caring compassionate group of clinical experts providing encouragement every step of the way.ÌýÌýWe provide this extraordinary level of care to more than 450 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients each year.ÌýÌýThe has been a pioneer in many ways, including being the first on Long Island to offer digital mammography and one of the first seven centers in the world equipped with a tomosynthesis machine.ÌýÌýStony Brook's breast cancer surgeons specialize in breast conservation surgery and the first on Long Island to offer the less-invasive sentinel node biopsy

Currently, we accept one fellow per year through the Match.Ìý

The curriculum has been developed to build upon the knowledge and skills learned during residency. ÌýThe fellow receives advanced training from a team of veteran breast imaging radiologists and gains experience interpreting mammograms, breast ultrasounds and MRIs. You also perform image-guided procedures such as fine-needle aspiration, needle localization and breast biopsies. The overall goal is for the fellow to become proficient in breast imaging radiology and procedures as well as adopt lifelong learning and self-assessment skills. ÌýThe fellow is able to pursue future positions in either an academic or private practice setting.
