[¼"A0q.ddddStony Brook Health Outreach and Medical Education (HOME) is a free clinic providing vital health services to underserved communities in Suffolk County. I had the opportunity to volunteer at the clinic through the Undergraduate Clinical Experience Program (UCEP). This program gave me the unique experience to learn from both Stony Brook medical students and attending physicians in addition to serving the community. In reflecting on my experiences at Stony Brook HOME, I always think back to my first day at the clinic. I remember waking up feeling excited and energized in anticipation of what I would learn and do that day. Upon arriving at the clinic and meeting the Stony Brook medical students and attending physicians working that day, I felt fortunate to volunteer with such a remarkable team. There is a very genuine and powerful sense of camaraderie amongst these students and doctors who teach and support one another and help those who are in need of medical care. At my first clinic session, a patient stopped by with homemade food for the staff and showed such an appreciation for the health services received from Stony Brook HOME a telling gesture. At each clinic session, preclinical medical students begin by triaging patients and taking their vital signs. As a UCEP student I learned how to assist with triage as the medical students shared their knowledge and guidance. I was also able to measure patients height and weight and calculate BMI. This is another aspect of why UCEP is so beneficial; it provides hands-on experience that illustrates what it is like to work with patients, which is an invaluable addition to a pre-medical education. The clinic fostered an environment where I felt comfortable asking questions when I didnt understand something, such as a specific medical term, or if there was something I wanted to learn more about. I found that the medical students and physicians always took the time to teach and answer any questions UCEP students had. After triaging patients, I would follow clinical students who performed physical exams. From the clinical students, I learned how a thorough physical exam is performed, including how to take social and family history. Hearing each patients story, I not only learned more about medicine, but I also gained a greater cultural awareness that will undoubtedly help me in my future work with diverse patient populations. Following the physical exam, the clinical students would then give case presentations to the attending physicians. In their case summaries, the clinical students gave their impressions and outlined plans for treatment, management and follow up. This aspect of clinic taught me about the principles of differential diagnosis and how specific diagnostic tests are interpreted. The attending physicians would then perform their own physical exams on the patients and discuss medication and treatment options. From this I gained a more thorough understanding of the clinical skills I will one day utilize as a physician. One of the things that makes Stony Brook HOME unique is that it is run by health professional students. There is a focus on teaching, mentoring and working as a team to provide the best possible care for patients. This aspect of the clinic is one way that UCEP is an invaluable opportunity that allows pre-medical students to appreciate how medicine is taught, why being a physician means being a lifelong learner as well as other responsibilities and possibilities associated with a career in medicine. As part of the program, UCEP students receive hour-long lectures from medical students on relevant clinical conditions. These lectures also focus on the importance of culturally competent and compassionate healthcare, which is an essential aspect of the clinic as it serves patients from diverse backgrounds. This is one of the many reasons I was initially drawn to apply to UCEP. I am very passionate about the issue of equality in healthcare, particularly in terms of increasing access to healthcare and providing healthcare to members of underserved communities. It was a wonderful experience to be in an environment where everyone is passionate about not only the science of medicine, but the humanity of medicine. My experience at Stony Brook HOME provided me with new insights into how medicine is practiced and it also further solidified my belief that medicine is the path for me. The work at Stony Brook HOME is fundamentally what practicing medicine is all about committed individuals working together to provide compassionate and competent care to those in need. j`qJhNhLs$aJ h?ahLs$aJhNhLs$aJ h?ahLs$hLs$ `gdLs$":pLs$/ =!"#`$`%<@< NormalCJaJmH sH tH DA@D Default Paragraph FontRiR Table Normal4 l4a (k(No List. z 0@0@0@0@0@0 0 00A8?0A8?{ } ~::@} } } } @ @UnknownGTimes New Roman5Symbol3 Arial h % % !24dC`2Stony Brook Health Outreach and Medical Education (HOME) is a free clinic providing vital health services to underserved commun Rachel ImhofNicole Giambalvo Oh+'0T1 ,DP` | 'Stony Brook Health Outreach and Medical Education (HOME) is a free clinic providing vital health services to underserved communRachel ImhofNormalNicole Giambalvo2Microsoft Word 11.6.6@e@B#@B#G`/PICT/Xb HHb bHHJJbb qkZo{wwwwwo{ wwwwwwo{wwwkZwwo{wswwwGRg9ZVg9Vg9ZZVcRVZRcVg9kZ^VJRVVZVg9^RcNsVZ^cVg9RVkZcVNsg9VkZo{ZVkZkZ^NskZNso{cZkZZkZRo{VckZo{NskZSwwwwwkZsswo{wwwwwww6R^NsJRZ^kZZ^Zg9Z^VZ^kZZ^kZ^ZcZNsF1kZ^VZVZo{VR^kZkZZNscZ^Vg9kZRVZg9R^ZkZRVo{g9g9ZkZR^VR^kZVg9g9R^ ^wwwwwwo{wwkZo{wwkZkZo{wkZww"Vo{VZg9RR^cRg9R^cNsZ^kZckZVZRJRckZNsZVNskZZ^$Vc^ckZZckZBkZkZcZVckZkZRo{ZZRckZVNsVVRNsRJR^SwswwkZo{wwwwwww^VV^AkZZ^kZVVc^g9ZkZ^VkZNskZZNsJRZg9RRg9ZVg9Vg9ZZVNskZ^ZZVRRZ^VNsVZVg9RVRVcZRg9Zo{ZVVZNsKwwwwswkZo{ wwkZwwo{ww,VZR^ZVg9ZZ^kZkZNscg9R^cZNsF1kZ^VZg9NskZRkZ^RNscZVNsZ^kZZ^JR^ZVg9Rg9ZVg9Vg9ZZVcVNsg9Vg9VNsRg9ZewwwwswwwwwwswwwwGJRo{VVRVcVg9ZNsZkZ^ZNsVg9Vg9JR^ckZNso{ckZkZF1kZF1kZR^NsRVo{Vc^ZkZ^^kZNsc^kZcZ^ZVVZ^V^kZZ^^Zo{V[swwwwwwwwwwwwwwkZVg9o{ZZV^ZVZkZVwRJRkZVwZ^RRVkZVZ g9RVNsVg9cRZVVkZ^kZNscVg9JR^ckZNso{cVVZNskZ^VcJR^RNsVg9 co{wwwwwwwwwwwswswwKVg9ZF1NsRZo{cNsZg9^ZJRg9ZVVZVg9RVZo{JRZRg9RcNsVZVwZkZNsVcg9RVNsVg9wkZkZ^ZkZZkZRVVRNskZZRVR^kZVwZR?wwkZwwswsww&Z^JRVkZF1kZVkZVF1kZ^g9^BkZkZR^RRVkZ^Zc^V^o{VJRVZVZkZkZ^R^VZ^ZkZcVNsNskZVZ^ VNsRVcZg9JR^Z^_wwwwwwwwwwwwwswwNs^Z^VNsVVZZNsg9ZkZZVNsZg9^VJRVVZZ^Z(V^VF1g9R^kZVF1R^RJRZZ^VwF1VkZ^NsV^^ZkZNsRZo{cNsYwswwwww wswswsswwwcVkZ^ZcNskZg9kZ^ZRkZo{NscZ^ZRZVwVZV^^Vg9NsZ^ZRg9VwZRRZNskZ^NsNsZ^kZZkZZkZJR^NsVkZNsVZF1ZVZZ Sw swwwwwskZo{wwkZwwo{wwZ^JRVCZZkZ^cNsg9RVRkZg9R^R^VZRZ^kZkZZ^ZkZ^cVkZ^ZkZRNskZRg9ZVg9Vg9ZZVcVNsg9VsVg9R^Vcc^ZRkZ^WwwwwwwwwwwwwwGZwg9^VJRckZNsZZ^ZRZVwZkZ^VNso{cNsNskZ^ZZVRRZ^VNsR^ZVRg9ZNsco{VcZV^^VNsVVZg9VVo{JRg9R^o{kZgwwwkZkZo{wwwwwwwwwwwwwLkZZVRo{cVZZwZVcZVcZg9^Z^Vg9kZRVkZV^ZRZVcZF1ZRg9VkZJRZo{Vc^VZJR^NsRZZVkZZRZ^Vg9ZF1VkZ^Zg9R^^jwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwo{wKVVZVRZc^VVZc^RVVc^kZVRZVRZVRkZ^g9ZNskZ^VZ^kZJRV^^VNsR^ZRg9VVZVZZRg9VVZcVkZcRVRVRg9kZ_kZwwswwkZkZo{wswwwwwww:kZRRRVVZg9R^NsZZ^cg9ZkZVNsg9cZVcRZR^JRkZo{ZVkZo{g9ZRkZo{Z^ZRVVZVZV^kZZ^ Vc^JRVg9o{kZRZZVRZ WwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwkZw-VNsVg9Zo{ZkZNs^g9ZVwZkZVVkZJRZJRVVg9ZwVNsZRRVVNskZVRVRkZ^VZRVg9ZVZkZVNskZ^RcVRZ^cVg9RVkZR^awswwwswswwwwwwwwww/Vo{VZkZZZRkZ^F1V^VkZ^ZVNskZJRg9VwR^kZRRkZg9NsNskZRg9F1kZ^VZVNsc^NsRVZVwRJRkZZo{F1g9^VZ^kZNsVZSwwswwswwwwwwwLZNskZ^JRo{VcwZ^JRVZVZZ^ZkZZNskZ^ZZVkZRkZNsg9ZkZo{ZR^kZ^VRZZNskZ^JRo{VckZVRVg9^Zg9ZkZ^VkZBkZZkZ^VRJRg9kZWswwwwwwwwwwwwwFR^VZg9RVg9JR^NsRZo{cNsZRZ^Vg9ZVVZZRg9ZZo{VZNsVRg9Zg9ZZVg9R^g9o{NsRg9ZRVcRVVZVZVZkZVVg9^NsRVZ'wkZkZo{www+cZVcZRZ^VNsRVZָ ]wswwswwwwwwswwwo{GZwZ^kZg9^VZVcZVg9VVNswkZVwZ^RkZZkZRVwckZNsZVkZZRZ^VNsVNsZZ^kZkZRNskZJRZRg9RcVRkZVNskZZg9RNskZgwwwwwwwwwwwwswwwwwIJR^ckZNso{cVRg9^Z^JRZwkZRVkZV^ZRZVwVg9F1kZZ^cRZRg9ZZVkZ^kZVNskZRZ^kZkZRNskZJRwo{VcRZo{VcRZVwNsNsV^c wwswwwwwwwwwwwwwwLZco{VNsVZNsNs^kZg9Ro{NsZkZg9cRV^Vc^VcRZV^^Vg9ZZNskZg9wkZVZg9ZVkZg9RVkZJRZNsRkZ^VRZ^g9NsRZo{ZV^wR^g9kZ]wwwww wwwwwwwwswwwLNsZZcVo{JRZVckZ^JR^kZc^Z^kZNsVVRkZ^V^ZNsRVNswo{kZRVZZ^RRZkZg9R^RNsRNsNsZRg9^RVVkZVwo{JRZ^^kZJR Kwo{wwwwwwwwwwZJRo{JRg9Z=^kZJRo{ZF1g9ZkZRVwNscg9R^ZRg9ZZVkZ^kZVNsg9g9R^ckZNsZVkZZRZ^VNsVV^kZZJR^Vc^^cVZ^EwwwwwwwwwwIZkZ^ZJRNs^ZVZg9Zg9R^Vg9RVZNscF1g9Zo{ZVVZkZVJR^^cVZ^Z^NsF1kZV^^ZcR^ckZNso{cNsZg9^ZJRg9ZcVkZ^g9RVkZKwwwwswswwkZwsww#o{NsRkZ^ZF1VZVVZZ^g9kZNs^ZZkZVZRkZg9kZ^JRNsRVg9JRkZV%cF1kZ^Vg9VZkZRkZZVZZkZRo{ZVZZ^RZkZckZNso{cg9V^JRg9OwwwswsswwwswwkZwLNsRVRZ^g9g9R^ZkZNscRkZ^ZZkZZo{kZRkZJRg9NsRNscVZZRVZRZVwZZ^ZkZZZNscVZZ^cg9^NsZVkZ^Nsg9^RkZ^RZkZR^?wwwswwwwwGJRg9JRZo{VcZRg9ZZo{VF1VV^kZZJR^VZ^kZkZZF1kZg9R^^ZVRZRg9ZZVRkZBkZZZVJR^ZVg9VVg9ZVVZRc^ZZ Ywwo{wwwwwwwswwwKNsRZZVg9RVVZg9kZ^VF1kZ^JRZZg9RVZg9kZZNskZJRo{ZkZcVNs^ZVNsRkZ^g9RZR^cR^F1^kZZNsVZNscZkZJR^ckZNsZVkZ'wwwwwKZNskZRkZVwo{kZZV^ZVg9^g9^V^VZVZRg9RcNsVko{swwwwkZ o{wwkZwwo{wwwwwswHco{V^ZkZg9R^JRo{VcZg9F1g9NskZVV^ZRg9F1g9VNsZVcVNsg9V^VV^^Rg9RVg9Zo{ZkZ^VRg9R^VZRZkZZkZ^ZF1VVkZEwkZwswwwwwwwKNs^Z^VNskZR^kZ^RNsZc^ZZVRVcRNscwNskZ^JRZkZNscVVZVVkZVNscVZVRVNskZg9ZZkZZkZR^g9R^R^ZNsZZRJR^KskZwswwwwkZkZo{wwww?@CRoot Entry FoVȺE1TableWordDocument$.SummaryInformation( 1DocumentSummaryInformation89CompObjXObjectPooloVȺoVȺ FMicrosoft Word DocumentNB6WWord.Document.8
